  The Omega
Because we had the high slope and large tree in the playing field, we could set up a really wild Omega (aka Flying Fox) station. It was a thrilling, relatively long ride that starts off with the ground gently falling away from you....

...it then gets yikes! when you are over the drain at the bottom of the slope, just before you hit the deceleration contraption (rubber tire).

(right) Here was the team that built the Omega for Pioneering Project 1988. We can be seen fixing the anchor point (sooo important!!) behind the A-frame. The other end of the rope was tied to the large tree at the top of the slope.

Omega Landing

Whoopeeeee!
Zipping down the Omega was considered by all to be too brief an experience, and we would have gone on all week if we could have. The rope dragging on the ground behind the rider was used to haul the pulley back up the slope. The lifejacket was secured to the main pulley with a short rope and acted as a kind of safety belt cum body padding. How wacky was that?!

Uphill in the background of the photo is where the present campus of NJC now stands, and the field is now a full-fledged playing field with 400m track and all. Too bad... Wonder if they still set up the Omega nowadays?
