Ancient History...
A short record of our past endeavours,
as told through old photographs

To those unfamiliar to what members of an Outdoors Activities Club (OAC, or sometimes "ODAC") does, here is a perfunctory tour of some of the highlights.

To those who were there, we hope these photos bring on the smile of recognition or wistful reminiscence, of the fun and laughter, of the aches and pains, and of the time when youth imbued us with the sense of almost reckless adventure...

(Ok ok, enough of the poetic crap.....) *grin*

If you have any photos to contribute, please let Timothy know.
Some photos used here were NOT shot by Tim, however the true identities of the photographers are almost impossible to ascertain now. Please accept that we acknowledge the original photographers (whoever they may be) and hope they will not kick up a fuss that we are using these images. :)

Campfire's burning
Campfire's burning
Draw nearer, draw nearer
In the gloaming, in the gloaming
Come sing and be merry

The whole idea of OAC is of course, to enjoy the outdoors and for everyone to participate in adventure-oriented activities. A constant feature of many of our outings was the campfire, and of course, the ubiquitous campfire songs.

NJC OAC Logo

The NJC OAC Logo

This is a slightly stylised version painted from memory... It might be a bit off... Can't remember the significance of all the various elements in the logo, and wouldn't want to bore you with the details anyway, but suffice to say that we were always proud to wear it. In case it isn't obvious, the "OAC" in the logo is supposed to be the flame of a campfire... Go figure! :)

NJC OAC Group Portrait 1988

The Club Group Portrait 1988
This was probably Tim's only photo project of this scale! As a college photographer, he did plenty of class photos, but THIS! Whew! Anyway, for some reason, the whole line-up-by-height-so-that-everyone-is-arranged-symetrically cocked up somehow, and 7 girls ended up in the back row, looking rather incongruous. Drats! This photo was taken in NJC's main hall in those days (the now demolished campus where Nanyang Girl's School now stands).

Exco '88-'89

Possibly the only group photo of the club's executive committee featuring everyone! The place is of course "Bahdin", that popular camping ground in a disused rubber plantation on the northern shore of Pulau Ubin. The photo was taken at the end of Backwoodsman Camp 1989, basically the highpoint and the biggest project of the year.

Snake!

Snake Soup
a la Ubin

Backwoodsman camp was all about adventure training and "living off the land". This photo shows the skinning of a (killed) python, which was subsequently served up by the various teams in the "cooking competition".

Canoes

Sea-Ex (aka Sea-X; aka Death-by-Rowing)
We went on an overnight canoeing expedition. Starting from Changi, we circled Ubin, camped on Coney Island (which is being reclaimed to form part of Punggol 21 New Town) and eventually returned to Changi. Photo was taken from the vantage point of the support bumboat that accompanied our expedition, whilst we were busy forming up a "raft".
